Termite Program
The Top Turf Termite Control Program uses perimeter bait stations as the main source for controlling termite activity. We also use a liquid perimeter termiticide treatment for protection under patios and driveways that are too wide for effective use of bait stations alone. Our trained technicians return quarterly to maintain the stations and inspect for termite activity. We also inspect the interior of the home annually.
Subterranean termites are social insects
that live in colonies consisting of workers, soldiers, reproductives, and kings and queens.
They feed on wood or other items that contain cellulose, such as paper, fiberboard, and
some fabrics derived from cotton or plant fibers. Subterranean termites nest in the soil
to obtain moisture, but they also nest in wood that is often wet. A single termite feeding
on the wood in your house will damage the wood slowly, but the amount of damage can
drastically increase when a large colony is located under the foundation of your home.
Queens lay thousands of eggs, and it does not take long for an uncontrolled colony to
drastically increase in size. |

When subterranean termites
discover your home, they will search it for wood fiber. They will squeeze through cracks
as narrow as a penny in search of it. Expansion joints, foundation cracks, tiny gaps
around plumbing and electrical service entries are all opportunities for termites. They
easily attack wood that is in contact with soil. If the wood does not contact the soil,
termites can build mud tunnels or tubes to reach wood above the ground. These tunnels can
extend for 50-60 feet to reach wood and often pass through the gaps and cracks mentioned
above. |

Bait stations allow us to attract the termites
to a centralized feeding area. Pieces of non-toxic food that termites are known to prefer
to eat are placed in these bait stations. The stations are designed to help make sure that
foraging termites easily find and begin feeding on this food. Once activity is noticed in the stations, we add a slow acting toxicant bait inside the station without disturbing the feeding termites. This new bait acts slowly enough that the feeding termites return to the colony and infect the entire colony with the toxicant, thus eliminating the entire colony. |
The quantity of toxicant bait added to the station is verysmall, and is very low in toxicity to humans. The active ingredient we use to eliminate the termite colony is less toxic to humans and pets than table salt. This is because the active ingredient only affects animals that molt, and humans and our pets do not molt.
Once all active
termite colonies are eliminated, there is always the possibility that the colony can be
re-populated by new termites. For this reason, we return on a quarterly basis to
re-inspect the bait stations in order to insure that re-infestation does not occur.

In addition to the perimeter based bait stations, we also use liquid
termiticide in order to protect your home. This may involve drilling small holes in your
patio and garage/driveway area so that the termiticide can be injected around the
foundation of your home. This termiticide, like the active ingredient in the bait
stations, will infect the termites that come in contact with it. They will in turn infect
other foraging termites that they come in contact with, and eventually the entire colony
will be eliminated.
